When it comes to reselling online, many resellers head straight to eBay or Amazon to list their products and make profit. But Gumtree is a good site for reselling products too. It’s popular with consumers – thousands of people search the site every month and it’s cheap and easy to list items (you can even list items for free).
Gumtree is a site like any other listing site. It allows people to list items for sale. Items are searchable by product description, category and location and there are a variety of products up for grabs – from consumer electronics to household items. Most of the products sold on Gumtree are second hand however sometimes people do list products that are brand new and in the box.
If you have stock to resell online it’s worth using Gumtree. Here are some steps on how to list products and how to get the most exposure to your adverts:
The first thing you need to do when listing an advert on Gumtree is to choose the category you want to list your product in. This is crucial to your ad’s success – people will search for products in categories and if yours isn’t in the right one you could be missing out on customers. The ‘for sale’ category has quite a few product categories to choose from and some include audio and stereo, phones mobile phones and telecoms, sports leisure and travel and video games and consoles. Find the category you think best suits the product you are selling.
Listing Your Advert
Once you have chosen the category you need to list your advert online. Firstly, give it a title. Your title should be full of keywords that could make your ad easy to find (people occasionally search for a specific make and model and putting this as the title could make your advert more visible). You then need to fill out the description box detailing your product. If you’ve got clearance or returned goods from a wholesale supplier you should clearly list this on your advert to avoid any customer complaints or returns. Use the description box to sell your product and try to include as much information as possible about make, model, design and measurements. The more information you can give in the description box the more interest you’ll gain from customers and it should mean less product confusion too.
You can add up to nine images on your Gumtree advert and the more pictures the merrier! Most consumers browsing for products online will only consider purchasing ones that have pictures on them – some consumers even filter their search results to only include adverts with pictures on which means, if yours doesn’t have pictures, you won’t even show up in search results. Adding pictures to your advert helps you to illustrate your product description and they instil trust in your advert – a customer is more likely to want to purchase an item if they can see the condition it is in.
Gumtree also give you an opportunity to add a link to a You Tube video. So if you have a reselling business that is fairly established and you use You Tube as a promotional tool – why not consider shooting a video of the product to include in your advert? This can be effective for a variety of products. If you’re listing furniture you could do a room tour video to show the customer the size of the item within a room. If you are reselling electronics you could do an out of the box video and hands on review to show a customer what the product looks like in more depth. You could even include a promotional video link to your business. It’s not essential to include a video link but it could be an extra marketing tool.
One thing to bear in mind when listing products on Gumtree is that this site is used mainly by people looking to collect items. A lot of people will search Gumtree for their local area and then inquire about products that are available for collection (it’s mainly used by people looking to sell off unwanted furniture or household items so they’ll usually target their ads to their local area as this will receive more hits). So when reselling on Gumtree you can either list an advert and offer delivery (you should list this in the description box and ensure you do your research on delivery costs) or you can add your postcode or home town if you want local people to collect. It totally depends on the type of item you are reselling.
Once you have given a location to your advert you are ready to list it, free of charge! Be sure to include your email address so customers can contact you.
Should You Pay to List an Item?
For the most part Gumtree is free to use but you can pay to list your adverts and this can be beneficial. There are three tiers to the payment plan on Gumtree. ‘Urgent’ is an ad that could get you three times more views and replies because of its visibility on the site. It’s £3.95 to list an urgent advert for seven days and could be a good option if you’ve got stock you want to turn around quickly. A ‘Featured’ advert will typically receive seven more views and replies than the average advert – you can choose to have a featured advert for three days (£3.95), seven days (£5.95) or 14 days (£7.95) and this advert will appear at the top of your chosen category and location making it much more visible. If you have an item that you know will resell well and don’t want to miss out on customers then you could pay for a ‘Spotlight’ advert which is £19.95 for 7 days. The spotlight adverts will go on the homepage of Gumtree and receive much more attention than any other advert. If you choose to use one of Gumtrees paid platforms then you’ll certainly receive more views but you should weigh up the cost of listing against the possible profits – remember, if you list a free advert you will make much larger profit margins.
